About Us

Camp Evergreen is a non-profit, charitable organization owned and operated by the Alberta Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. The Camp is located on 480 acres of natural beauty, 14 kilometres south of Sundre.

After several months of prayer and reflection, on January 10, 2010, Camp Evergreen's Camping Ministries Commission (Board of Directors) unanimously affirmed a new vision, mission and values for Camp Evergreen. We continue to be a place where faith is developed and lived out, fun is an unavoidable fact of life, and fellowship is how we operate, as we worship, live, work and play together. We continue to serve Alberta's kids and youth as our primary mission field, encouraged by Psalm 78:4, which reads,

"We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done."

Our new vision, mission and values reflect our desire to serve God wholeheartedly, to recognize that it's not by our own power, but by the power of God that people's hearts are changed, and to worship, live, work and play in an environment of celebration, love and hope!

Vision

Camp Evergreen has a vision to be a camping ministry that sees "individual lives transformed through the power of Jesus."

Mission

Camp Evergreen exists to share the good news of Jesus Christ and to grow kids and youth - spiritually, mentally, socially, physically, wholly - cultivating confidence, facilitating courage, and equipping leaders among our campers, guests and staff, all while having fun and using God's creation as a key tool!

Values

Celebration.

"This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:4). Evergreen is a place for celebration! We celebrate all that God does; all He has made; each life devoted to Him. (Psalm 47:1).

Dependency on Jesus.

Apart from Christ, we can do nothing (John 15:5). We rest in His strength and power as we fulfill our mission (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). We rely on His inerrant Word (Hebrews 4:12).

Love.

We are Christ's representatives. In everything we do, we seek to be a community that serves one another, driven by our whole-hearted love for God and self-giving love for one another (Matthew 22:37-39).

Prayer.

Prayer is foundational to the very existence of Camp Evergreen. We will seek God continually as we listen, pray and read His word (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Relational Integrity.

We worship, live, work and play as a team. Our relationships are driven by love (1 John 4:7-21) and defined by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). We seek transparency and accountability in our discussions and decision-making, we trust authority, and practise mutual respect. We strive to be the same on the inside as we are on the outside (Proverbs 10:9; 11:3).

Our Story

Camp Evergreen was founded in 1963 by the Alberta Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. The initial $4,000.00 purchase of 160 acres, was designated to provide a permanent site for the development of a children's camping program.

Prior to 1963, the camping ministries of the Conference were held at Southern Alberta Bible Camp, and Camp Okotoks, southwest of Calgary. A number of individuals including Peter Rempel, formed a committee to select a site and develop a program for the Conference young people. The first camp was held at the present site in the summer of 1963.

The first main structure was built without insulation and included a kitchen, a dining area and a meeting place for services. This was eventually followed by more permanent structures: the main lodge (built in 1978), 16 winterized cabins, a mini-lodge (built in 1969), the Creator's Cabin and meeting rooms (old dining hall) and the Activity Centre (built in 1976).

As with most camps, staffing was done by volunteers until the need for a resident manager was recognized to meet security and promotional needs. The first full-time Manager/ Program Director was Walt Loewen (1971 - 1981). Norbert Bargen (1981 - 1986) followed with increased responsibilities for the development of the Guest Group Ministries program. Herb Harder's (1986-1992) arrival marked the increased enhancement of the site, increased full-time staffing positions, expansion of the riding program (new barn, riding arena and livery built in 1991), and other programming initiatives. Paul Isaac (1992 - 2002) continued with site and program development as did Rick Arkell (2003 - 2008).
