Volunteers make camp work!

Camp Evergreen relies on the support of wonderful volunteers...people just like you...to help us run our year round programs. We welcome guest groups (schools, churches, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, and others) on site from September to June each year, and we run seven busy weeks of summer camp in July and August.

From September to June we need volunteers for various guest groups, weekends and projects. In summer we need 10-15 volunteers EACH week to make our camps work. Volunteers provide an extremely important part of our ministry and make it possible for our full-time and seasonal staff to run camp. Whether you're a parent of a camper for the week, a church member who wants to be a part of the ministry here, a tradesman, nurse, or someone that has the heart and the hands to serve - we need and appreciate you wanting to serve.

Volunteering at camp can look like a number of different roles. Working in the kitchen, on maintenance, at our horse barn, or possibly even in a cabin. We will assess your experience and interest with you to find you the right place. Before you start filling out the Volunteer Application, take a look at our list of Job Descriptions to see if there's a role that catches your eye. We define a volunteer as someone who is giving time to Camp Evergreen in an unpaid position.

If you are volunteering in a position where you will NOT be working with children, youth, or vulnerable adults:

Examples of these positions are maintenance, kitchen, support staff (custodial), or camp pastor. Here's the application you fill out: Volunteer Application

If you are volunteering in a position where you will be working with children, youth, or vulnerable adults:

As a Christian camp, whose purpose is to teach the Gospel and in accordance to our Safe Place Policies, if you would like to volunteer in a teaching position or where you are going to be leading a cabin with children, we will need you to fill out our Main Staff Application. Please check out our Job Descriptions to learn more about which positions are considered "teaching positions".

While there is no deadline for summer volunteer applications, it is always helpful for us to know 1-2 weeks prior to your coming to help us in our planning.

Please note that we must have ALL of your checks and application information before you are allowed to volunteer.

In addition to your application, we will require:

For all volunteers

1. A Criminal Record Check (CRC)

For volunteers working directly with children

2. A Vulnerability Sector Search (VSS) from your local RCMP or city police if you are over the age of 25 and are working directly with children. Just go in and ask them for a Criminal Record Check and tell them you'll be working with children. They'll do your CRC and VSS at the same time. This may cost you money - as you are volunteering (not getting paid) please contact camp and we will send you a cover letter that will get you the check for free or almost free. Camp will cover any remaining cost.

3. For Alberta residents over the age of 18 we also require a Child Intervention Check. This is done at your local Child and Family Services office NOT the police station. It's a completely separate check done through the provincial government. To find an office closest to you follow this link and select your area on the left-hand bar to find the nearest office.

FAQs

Q Who is Camp Evergreen?

A Camp Evergreen is affiliated with the Alberta Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches and is located on 480 acres of forest and field in the Alberta foothills. We're approximately an hour northwest of Calgary and an hour southwest of Red Deer.

Our Mission is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and to grow kids and youth – spiritually, mentally, socially, physically, wholly – cultivating confidence, facilitating courage, and equipping leaders among our campers, guests and staff, all while having fun and using God's creation as a key tool. Camp Evergreen wants to see lives transformed through the power of Jesus.  “...we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.” Psalm 78:4

To achieve our mission, we offer a well-balanced program of individual and groups activities, skill instruction and Bible teaching, carried out by committed and growing Christian staff. We design our programs with the unique needs of each camper in mind. Camp Evergreen embraces a philosophy of life patterned on Biblical values and teachings.

We adhere to the Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith.

Q Do I have to be a Christian to work at Camp Evergreen?

A No. While we require certain positions and cabin leaders to be Christians, there are many areas where you can volunteer.

Q What if I decide to volunteer last minute and don't have time for a criminal record check?

A For volunteers not working directly with children we partner with Back Check and can get your Criminal Record Check (CRC) done in 1-2 business days. For the safety of our guest and campers a Vulnerability Sector Search (VSS) and Child Intervention Check must be submitted prior to volunteering at camp for those volunteeers working directly with children.
