Welcome Crocheters!
We are excited about introducing our very first "hook up" (do you like what we did there?) for crocheting. If you didn't know already, our Director, Courtney, has a big thing for crocheting. After many requests, we are so excited to announce our first crochet summit!
Amigu-what?!
Courtney will be teaching attenders how to begin their journey to becoming amigurumi makers. Amigurumi is the Japanese word for a crocheted, stuffed animal. And that's precisely what we will be learning to make at this Ami-along Summit.
Things you will learn at this summit:
-
Yarn type
and selection
-
Basics of hook selection
-
Typical stitches used in amigurumi (magic circle, HDC, DC, bobble, whip stitch). Attendees should have a basic understanding of a foundation chain and single crochet (SC).
-
Sewing your amigurumis together.
-
The project will likely be a very basic amigurumi or a baby rattle to allow everyone to get a good start on a project.
If we have time:
-
Scupting your pieces and embellishments
Cost:
Price: $100 plus GST.
The summit will start at 7pm on Friday, March 17th and run until Saturday evening. Price includes your accommodations, meals (3 plus snack), and a $15 supply fee. Supplies will include the stuffing, safety eyes, and small items needed for the project.
Supplies you are responsible for bringing:
Although Camp Evergreen will supply some of the more unique items, each attendee is required to bring their own 3.5 hook and colour of yarn they would like to work with. Project will be revealed closer to the date of the event and will likely require 2-3 skeins (rolls) of worsted weight yarn. We do this so that you are able to go home from the summit and keep working on your project in the colours that you want.
If small amounts of yarn is required, there will be some yarn available to work with.
Do I have to know how to crochet to attend? What if I want to attend and read a book?
We would like everyone who attends to know how to do a slip knot, foundation chain, and single crochet before they attend. We would also recommend trying out a magic ring stitch too. There are tons of YouTube videos to learn how to do these and they are much better than 15 people trying to watch what Courtney is doing with her hook, hands, and yarn!
If you would like to come and enjoy the relationships that are had sitting in a circle and simply read a book, you can do that for $15 less the price quoted above. :)
How old do you need to be to attend?
If you can do a slipknot, foundation chain, and a single crochet stitch you can attend. I would recommend trying out the magic ring before you come too as it is a key stitch and takes some time to learn.
Will there be a spiritual component?
Camp Evergreen is a faith-based camp and desires to be a place where all people can connect, explore, and grow in community and in relationship with Jesus. During this summit, there will be one or two brief devotional thoughts that Courtney will share that relates to crocheting and her faith.
